How to Choose an Electric Bike?

What e-bike can (not) you ride and where?

Firstly, we need to know if you can ride your e-bike in your area, and what type of e-bike you could ride.

What kind of riding do you intend to do?

Most commonly used e-bike are electric urban (hybrid) bikes, electric mountain bikes (E-MTB), and electric road bikes. E-urban bikes are mostly used for short-range commuting. E-MTB is typically for off-roading, climbing the unsurfaced tracks and steep. E-road bikes are usually used for long-distance riding trips.

Electric urban bike

Most people buying an e-urban bike are to avoid traffic jams to save time and climb the sloping road. A larger battery and reliable motor would be important.

Electric mountain bike

If you plan to buy an e-bike for off-roading, climbing hills, acceleration and higher motor torque rating should be considered, Typically, most motors’ torque is from 40 Nm to 75Nm, when over 55 Nm would be fit for climbing steep hills. What are the most important things for an e-bike?


Motors are at the heart of every e-Bike, it can boost the power in a short time, combined with the battery to make your pedaling easier.

The placement of the motor has a great impact on an e-bike. There are two common types of motors, Hub Drive Motor and Mid Drive Motor.

Hub driven motor: It is located in the front or rear hub, which is built in the wheel hub, most used in the urban e-bike, like our eRide Metro has a 500W rear hub drive motor, as well as some E-MTB, like our eTrail Terra has a 750W rear hub drive motor.

Suitable for commuting, climbing most hills (not steep), and exercise.



Mid driven motor: It is positioned between the pedals at the bike’s bottom bracket, which makes the bike more balanced and more efficient, and most mid driven motors have a lighter weight. But the downside of the mid drive is that it will increase chain wear and increase the maintenance cost. In addition, it would be more expensive than a hub drive motor.

Suitable for climbing mountains, roading, and graveling.

E-Bike Batteries

The first thing you need to check is the warranty of the battery, we’re not recommended to buy the e-bike with a battery’s warranty which is less than one year (Our Raddy e-bike provides one year warranty for the battery). Less than a one-year warranty always means low quality.

Secondly, it is battery capacity. Battery capacity is like a gas tank for a car, a larger battery could support you to reach farther, but the large capacity means the e-bike will weigh. The capacity unit is watt-hours (Wh), which means how many hours will the battery take to run out with 1-watt power. The number of watt-hours a battery will be indicative of the range on offer, a higher number generally being able to provide an increased range.


Riding Ranges

The riding ranges could vary from different situations: Terrain, rider/cargo weight, riding mode, driven, tire, average speed, weather, and so on.

What other features and accessories are necessary?

Fat tires: A large fat tire, usually 4-inch or greater, helps electric fat bikes ride up and over nearly any surface, loose soil, sand or even snow.


Handlebar-mounted LCD display: The display will keep track of the real-time speed, total mileage, speed grade, and battery power remaining of your e-bike, so that it's easy and convenient to know how far you have gone, when to charge or maintain, and more information you need.


Aluminum mudguards: They can prevent the water and mud from springing out on your clothes. It is also protected to the utmost extent, freeing you from the trouble of frequent maintenance of the e-bike.


Front light: Sometimes you may ride an e-bike in the evening, front light would be typically ride-friendly for use in all light conditions.


Rear rack: Always mounted in the cargo e-bike, it is solid and strong enough to carry heavy loads.
